![]() If you find the perfect head, why waste time on a level with another one that you will just discard. This added a bit of strategy the longer you play. Treasure chests galore lead to helpful upgrades while the scary mounted skulls give you another choice of “wearable” weaponry. There are two paths to choose from at the end of most levels and judging by their gaudy decorations, it is quite easy to tell what to expect. Each small level only takes about 90 seconds or so and at the end, Skul will either loot some gold, find a treasure chest, or sometimes, a new head. The gameplay loop in Skul: The Hero Slayer is incredibly simple yet unbelievably satisfying. Skul can also rescue some generous friends that will provide a free head to start your run with and an upgrade to give you a slight edge. In the early goings, I was netting only around 20-30 per run but very quickly it became 250-300 and up. The cost goes up significantly for each rank but the further into the game you progress, the more dark quartz you will earn. If you bring the dark quartz to the Witch in the beginning, she can grant permanent upgrades such as health, magic attack increase, and cooldown rates. As you play, enemies will drop dark quartz (both the story element and in-game currency). Also like most roguelites, you do retain something from your run to help with future runs. Granted, you will not get a feel for the actual damage but it is better than nothing.ĭid I mention that this is a roguelite? As with most, dying will kick you right back to the beginning of the game. You can test out some of the abilities when you first equip the new head and decide if you want to go back to your discard pile. ![]() I liked that picking up a head does not just destroy your existing one. ![]() Skul can carry two different heads (counting his own). This may be a hack and slash but some of the different heads do change up the playstyle enough to add variety to the gameplay. Sometimes, you just want to be yourself though. The Ent (looking a bit too Groot) changes Skul’s dash ability into a tackle which now causes damage. When swapping back to Skul, a bleed is inflicted on any attack targets for 6 seconds. For example, the Skeleton-Sword has a special ability called Sawblade and all attacks have a chance to inflict a bleed on the enemies. Each head comes with one or two abilities to use plus an additional ability that is triggered when swapping back to good ol’ Skul. ![]() Similar to that, Skul can find new heads like Thief or Knight or Jester. Huh? Does anyone remember Kid Chameleon for the Sega Genesis? Other times, I used it to reach a ledge that was slightly further than my jumping ability. Leaving my skull outside of the cloud gave way to an easy escape until I could rush back in and do damage. This one particular enemy drops a poison cloud that causes damage if you stay within it. This leads to some creative ways to fight your enemy. Skul will simply retrieve it upon walking up to it OR you can teleport to the location it landed. Doing so will cause damage to whatever it hits. In fact, someone gives you their leg before they die for you to use. As Skul, you will just swing that bony leg over and over until your enemies fall. Skul: The Hero Slayer is a roguelite, sidescrolling, action platformer. While Rudy might have come close to having his skull knocked off, Skul will actually take it off. Skul is the Rudy equivalent of video game characters. Still following? Of course, Skul is the smallest demon and everybody will not let you forget that fact. In fact, you could say the good guys have become the bad guys which makes you the good guy of the story even though you are the bad guys. The humans have somehow figured out how to use the Dark Quartz and it is not good. ![]() Your task is to rescue the Demon King who has been kidnapped by the humans and the first hero. Well, now is your chance to flip the script with Skul: The Hero Slayer.ĭeveloped by SouthPAW Games and published by Neowiz, Skul: The Hero Slayer puts you in the role of Skul, the lone survivor of the human attack. Imagine the same scenario but it is up to a lone bad guy to fight back and defeat the heroes. You know those movies that start with the good guys in hiding because the bad guys are in charge? There’s always that one hero/protagonist/what-have-you who must lead the charge and defeat the evil blah blah…the movie ends with order restored and evil vanquished. ![]()
